With the sub rule gone, it will be interesting to see how coaches use the bench in the first half of the season.
Western Bulldogs coach has said it will be interesting to see bench tactics this season, he refered to them holding a player back like a sub.
I have noticed during the Nab challenge, some coaches are holding back a player or 2.

Players are being held back in NAB because 24 are named in this last week, believe it was 26 in the other weeks... But Bevo has suggested leaving a player there like a sub in one of his earlier press conferences

That it used in NRL all the time. Onre of the 4 bench spots is not used till the 2nd half. They tend not to do that this year though as the limit is now 8 per game and some teams have been caught out with late injuries and players have had to stay on the field as they have no replacements left.

They might do this in the AFL but if you re going to use a player with pace in the last quarter then he will take the field cold and that's when they are more likely to do an injury
